What a great weekend! Another huge piece of the garden plan was put in place on Saturday with the help of garden club members and SIS faculty, the hoop house. I had mentioned the dream of having a hoop house at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony back in October and at that time Mayor Lauretti had offered to help make that dream a reality. After many hours of planning and preparing the many different parts, including the gable end walls, the sideboard and baseboards, we had a weekend that was warm enough and without any snow. I showed up around 8 and snowplowed the little bit of snow that was in the area where the hoop house would be placed. Joe and his brother Chris, along with Iztihaad showed up around 9 as well as Mr. S, Mr. Yamnicky, Mrs. Marks, my father, and my good friend Danny rounded out the work crew.
Once started, things progressed very smoothly and the next thing we knew, the gable walls were temporarily supported, the ribs were all in place, and we began working on the ridge pole. While this was going on, a team of students and adults started placing the baseboards and sideboards that would need to be bolted to the frame.
There were very few hiccups, the most perhaps being some spent batteries on the cordless drills, and before noon, we were starting to pull the plastic over the house. An hour later after some pulling and stapling, we had completed the majority of the construction.
The only things left to work on now include putting up the doors, finishing off the windows, and the sides and building the pallet tables that we are going to have inside to put the seedlings on.
I am hopeful that the seeds will be making their way into the house by mid week!
I want to say a huge thank you to the great work crew that took time out of their Saturday Morning to come in and move the SIS Community Garden forward.
